Horningsea Community Interest Company

The Plough and Fleece is a community pub. What this means is that is is a freehouse that is owned by investors from the community. The Horningsea CIC (Community Interest Company) manages the property and maintains it as a pub. Forever. This means that the building cannot be repurposed for any other use.

Horningsea Action CIC was incorporated on 6 March 2012 (Dissolved 18 August 2015). This CIC existed purely to obtain the property. On 24 September 2013 Horningsea CIC was incorporated and it has been looking after the property eversince. The CIC bought the pub from Green King using investment from approximately 120 members of the community. In the original business plan the community described what it wanted for the pub:

The pub provides warm welcoming fires in the winter and a great open space to relax with a Pimms in the summer. It understands and responds to the needs of those who use it: the family with young children having Sunday lunch, staff from local businesses getting out of the office mid-week, the Friday night crowd putting the world to rights with a pint of good beer and a steak, the music lovers out to hear a song or two, clubs popping in for a chat, afternoon tea and a scone or two. The Plough and Fleece is the place for all of this and more.

Keeping this in mind, our tenants are always striving to make the place welcoming. Horningsea CIC is a not-for-profit company. It is able to give tenants an attractive environment in which to run and grow their business. Any surplus the CIC makes are used principally for the benefit of the community. This means that any and all proceeds are being used to maintain the property and support the business. The CIC prides itself on working closely with tenants to make the business thrive.
